Vrbenské Ponds

Nature Reserve and Bird Paradise

On the northwestern outskirts of České Budějovice lies the Vrbenské Ponds Nature Reserve. Covering 246 hectares, this protected area boasts an exceptionally rich and unique flora and fauna. The reserve consists of four ponds – Černiš, Domin, Starý, and Nový Vrbenský – along with expansive wetlands and meadows.

The reserve was established on April 1, 1990, and since 1993, the educational trail "Po hrázích Vrbenských rybníků" has guided visitors through the area. This 4 km circular trail with 10 stops provides insights into the local wildlife and plant species and is also wheelchair accessible.

The reserve is particularly valuable due to the presence of rare and endangered bird species and is part of the Natura 2000 network as a special bird protection area, Českobudějovické rybníky. Apart from its diverse bird population, the area is also significant for its invertebrate fauna, particularly moths831 nocturnal species have been recorded here, representing 30% of all moth species in the Czech Republic. The reserve also hosts a significant bat population, which inhabits tree cavities along the embankments.

For nature lovers, the interactive Augmented Reality app "Ptactvo Vrbenských rybníků" offers an engaging experience, allowing users to explore rare birds, hear their sounds, and learn fascinating facts. More details and download links for Android and iOS.
