Fortified Settlement Žumberk near Nové Hrady

The fortified settlement of Žumberk near Nové Hrady is a historically and architecturally fascinating complex.

The fortress is a branch of the South Bohemian Museum in České Budějovice. Visitors can view an exhibition about the history of this location and its surroundings, as well as an ethnographic exhibition of folk painted furniture from the 18th and 19th centuries, primarily from the typical ethnographic regions of South Bohemia. The collection of rural furniture is also complemented by aristocratic furniture. Also worth mentioning is the interesting four-aisled Gothic church of St. John the Baptist from the mid-15th century, located near the fortress, and the Baroque column shrines on the village square, dating back to the 18th century.

At the end of the 15th century, an extensive late Gothic fortress was built in Žumberk. At the end of the 16th and the beginning of the 17th century, it underwent several architectural modifications, transforming it into a Renaissance chateau. The new owner of the Žumberk estate, Theobald Hock, had the fortress and the historical core of the village enclosed by a defensive wall with six bastions, probably between 1612 and 1615. However, the nobility ceased to reside in Žumberk from 1618 onwards. Over time, the complex was used for other purposes and began to decay. After extensive renovations between 1969 and 1974, the fortress was opened to the public.
