Pilgrimage Church of the Holy Trinity
Arguably the most impressive landmark of Trhové Sviny and its surroundings is the Pilgrimage Church of the Holy Trinity, located just under two kilometers south of the town.
It is proven that as early as the 16th century, a chapel stood at this site, attracting numerous pilgrims. Using funds gathered through voluntary donations, the present Baroque church was built between 1708 and 1710, although the architect remains unknown. The design is based on a central floor plan and reflects the Trinitarian dedication – the building features three altars, three gables, three towers, triangular windows, and is surrounded by a hexagonal cloister with three small towers.
A valuable Baroque ceiling fresco of the Holy Trinity was created in 1709 by the České Budějovice painter Bonanella.
Next to the pilgrimage church still stands a former small spa house, which was operated by the town of Trhové Sviny until the late 19th century. The remarkable triangular chapel houses a spring, whose water was traditionally believed to have healing powers, particularly against eye ailments.
