The Municipal Swimming Pool in Volyně, whose atmosphere and facilities still evoke its 1941 origins, is experiencing an exceptional summer. Recently declared a cultural monument by the Ministry of Culture, it has been recognized for its uniqueness as the only one of its kind in the republic. This prestigious accolade is attracting tourists and enhancing the city's chances of receiving grants to enhance the area while preserving its historical character.
This summer's vibe seems to echo the spirit of the film "Capricious Summer," with everything there reminiscent of that atmosphere. The pool, built by the Volyně Savings Bank between 1939 and 1941 for nearly 300,000 crowns, retains its original wooden cabins, showers, and pool. Water is drawn from the Volyňka River and regularly replaced. The area, featuring an 18 by 50 meter pool, is lined with tall trees and a railway track, making waving to passing trains a favorite pastime.
The status as a cultural monument has notably increased its appeal, especially for tourists, while regulars have long appreciated the charm of its refreshing waters. Mayor Lenka Nestřebová applied for its cultural monument status after encouragement from a local witness.
"A wedding reception at the swimming pool? When the ministry approved it, we took it as confirmation of recognizing the right values," said the mayor. She spent her childhood and school holidays there as a temporary worker and even held her wedding reception in the summer restaurant. The newly acquired status will also be celebrated with today's swimming competitions and an exhibition on its history, marking 70 years since the pool's inception.
