Bechyně Castle

Bechyně Castle

A Renaissance gem on a high cliff above the Lužnice River boasts the wedding hall of Petr Vok. Discover the most significant residence of the last of the Rosenbergs.

This originally princely estate in Bechyně, mentioned as early as the 9th century, is located on the southernmost rocky outcrop above the confluence of the Lužnice River and Smutná Stream. Before 1268, King Přemysl Otakar II acquired the "wild mountain Bechyně" from the property of the Prague bishops and had a stone castle built here. During the reign of King John of Luxembourg, the town was founded below the castle in 1323 and surrounded by walls. The current Renaissance appearance of the castle is the work of its most prominent owner, Petr Vok of Rosenberg. In the castle, you can admire Petr Vok’s wedding hall, where the famous wedding with Kateřina of Ludanice took place, the courtyard with illusionist paintings, and also the bedroom of this last member of the Rosenberg family. There is also an exhibition of children’s portraits here, which is unique in all of Europe. The castle has been a cultural monument of the Czech Republic since 1958. The current owner, Panství Bechyně SE, has been carrying out extensive and costly repairs and renovations of the entire castle since 1994, and in 1998, the castle was opened to the public for the first time.
