Egon Schiele's Garden House
Visit the garden house at the terraces in Southern Meander od Vltava, that in 1911 served as a residence and studio for the world famous painter Egon Schiele (1890-1918).
History of the House
The garden house on the terraced slope was built in the second half of the 17th century. In 1911, painter Egon Schiele (1890–1918) stayed and worked here. The house was found for Schiele, the rent arranged, and several repairs and modifications initiated by a local grammar school student named Willi Lidl. Thanks to the generosity of the then-owner, textile merchant Max Tschunk, Schiele was able to live here for free, along with his red-haired companion and model, Wally Neuzil. He loved this “summer” house and its flower-filled terraces.
Here, Schiele created numerous studies, drawing children who visited him, old women, retired soldiers, and young girls. On wooden boards, he painted oil scenes of Český Krumlov – now-famous paintings such as The Town on the Blue River, The Dead Town, Night Krumlov, or View of the Roofs of Krumlov. At the time, Schiele asked for 100 crowns for these works, yet it seems no one in Krumlov was willing to buy them, as they did not align with the popular artistic taste of the era.
What to See
Visitors can access the room where Schiele lived and worked in 1911. Step into the authentic setting of his artistic apartment, where his famous Krumlov paintings were born. Sit for a while exactly where the world-renowned artist once worked and then relax on the adjacent terrace with a cup of aromatic coffee or a glass of fine wine.
The house is set in a beautiful environment and is unique not only for its connection to this famous painter but also for its placement within the floral terraces, complete with a small vineyard. Nearby, you'll find a rose garden and the historic Synagogue building.
On the ground floor, there’s a small café offering high-quality coffee, wine, light snacks, and seating spread across the terraces and around the building.
Below the house, along the banks of the Vltava River, newly built water-access points and a floating dock invite you to relax on deck chairs, borrow a picnic blanket, and enjoy a moment of peace by the water.
