The Kleť Observatory is situated south of the peak of Kleť Mountain, at an altitude of 1,070 meters above sea level, making it the highest observatory in the Czech Republic. It is renowned both nationally and internationally for its research on asteroids and comets.

The International Astronomical Union has recognized 327 asteroids discovered at Kleť Observatory as confirmed discoveries with precisely determined orbits. This ranks the observatory sixth in the global statistics.

One of the asteroids discovered at Kleť Observatory was named after the city of Český Krumlov – it is the asteroid designated 2747, which has a diameter of nearly 20 kilometers and orbits the Sun once every 5.48 years.

How to get there

The Kleť Observatory is located south of the peak of Kleť, the highest mountain in the Blanský les (Blanský Forest), about 30 km southwest of České Budějovice, near Český Krumlov. The best access is via the Krásetín-Kleť chairlift.
