Historic Railway Tábor – Bechyně
The oldest electric railway route in Central Europe is the work of the genius František Křižík.
At the end of the 19th century, a decision was made to build a railway line between Tábor and Bechyně. Thanks to the efforts of the “Czech Edison”, František Křižík, the project was electrified. Only a few years later, in 1903, the first electrified railway in Austria-Hungary began operating.
But this railway's technical marvels don't end there. Right at the start of the line in Tábor, a river had to be bridged, and a power station was constructed to supply electricity to the tracks. The exceptional nature of Křižík's electric railway is also evidenced by the fact that it was granted special exceptions. For instance, it has tighter curves and navigates terrain with a gradient of up to 35 per mille.
The line has been modernized, so you can still enjoy a comfortable ride today. If you'd like to experience what it was like to travel here during your great-grandparents' time, don't miss a nostalgic ride on the historic Elinka tram or the Bobinka locomotive. These nostalgic rides operate on summer weekends until the end of the holiday season. Keep in mind that you need to book the Elinka in advance.
