Slavonice Underground
The underground passages of Slavonice are one of the oldest parts of the town – probably dating back to the 13th century.
Beneath most houses in the Lower Square (Náměstí Míru) and the Upper Square in Slavonice, there is a complex system of medieval underground corridors. The Slavonice underground is one of the oldest parts of the town and is likely connected to the Gothic buildings from the 13th century. Part of the tunnels is open to the public.
These rock-carved corridors were not only used for basement drainage but also served as defensive and escape routes in case of danger, with direct entrances from most houses in the historic town center. Over time, the underground system became non-functional and was flooded. Since 1991, the tunnels and cellars have been gradually restored, and part of the underground is now accessible to the public.
