Gothic Fortresses of Kestřany
Experience the Middle Ages firsthand!
In Kestřany, you will come across a truly unique historical monument. The village is home to two castles - the Upper Castle and the Lower Castle. This is a rarity: two well-preserved castles standing right next to each other.
The Lower Castle is located on flat terrain. It was originally a water castle, protected by the marshes of the Otava River. Its dominant feature is a square stone tower. The tower has three floors and was originally surrounded by wooden fortifications. The entrance was at the first-floor level, and the residential spaces were located on the upper floors. On the northern side, the remains of a medieval latrine can still be seen.
Today, the Upper Castle and the manor house are privately owned. Ongoing efforts are being made to restore this unique historical landmark. The owners aim to organize various public events, evening tours, and expand visitor services. The interiors of the Upper Castle are open to the public, and the castle owner is present even outside the tourist season.
