Lower Gate Gallery

Lower Gate Gallery

Enter the town of Prachatice through the Lower Gate, just like people in ancient times.

The Lower Gate, dating back to 1527 and also known as Písecká Gate, is part of the medieval fortifications of the town and is located at the entrance to the historic city center from Malé Square.

In front of the Lower Gate, a barbican was built as a defensive element to enhance the gate's protection. It has the form of a massive rectangular tower topped with a crenellated parapet and corner turrets. In 1569, the gate was adorned with exterior decorations, including heraldic five-petaled roses in the parapet niches (decorative railing), a depiction of a Rosenberg knight with the inscription "Laudamus veteres sed nostris utimur anni" (We praise the old, but we live in our own times) on the facade, and other Latin inscriptions.
