The Old Town Hall in Prachatice
Discover the artistic technique of "chiaroscuro" at the Old Town Hall in Prachatice.
The Old Town Hall in Prachatice is the city's most significant Renaissance monument, dating from 1571, and is adorned with the technique known as "chiaroscuro". This Italian term refers to an artistic method that creates contrast between light and shadow, with the primary focus on modeling light.
Particularly noteworthy are the paintings situated under the cornice, depicting the eight human virtues: patience, prudence, love, justice, faith, hope, courage, and temperance. Interestingly, the New Town Hall features illustrations of human activities and professions instead.
Also of interest at the Old Town Hall is the large Rosenberg coat of arms, held by two bears, located between the central windows of the town hall. Below the remaining windows, you will find depictions related to the judiciary and Latin inscriptions on a plaque in the first floor.
