Hus House in Prachatice

Discover the place where Master Jan Hus himself studied.

The Renaissance townhouse No. 71, known as Hus House, is located on Husova Street, at the corner with Věžní Street. Originally a Gothic one-story house, it was rebuilt in the second half of the 16th century in the Renaissance style and decorated with Sgraffito motifs. Inside, there are valuable vaulted spaces, including a transverse hall on the ground floor with a ribbed vault and a rear area with cross vaults on a central column.

The young Jeník (Jan Hus) attended school in Prachatice. According to tradition, during his studies, he lived in today's Hus House, No. 71. This originally one-story Gothic house was rebuilt in the Renaissance style in the 16th century. Its Lombard volute gables and richly decorated Sgraffito facade remain impressive to this day.

Jeník probably also sang in the local church’s boys' choir: "When I was a student and sang vigils with others, we sang one quickly to finish sooner." In Prachatice, he also met Master Křišťan of Prachatice, who later became the rector of Charles University in Prague. Around 1385, Křišťan likely took the young Jeník with him to Prague to continue his studies.
