Blatná Castle

Blatná Castle

The representative residence in Blatná was very often the centre of political events in the Czech Kingdom.

The current castle complex of Blatná is undoubtedly one of the most remarkable architectural and historical monuments of its kind. It is one of the best-preserved moated castles in the Czech Republic.

The most significant period of the castle began in the 15th century with the arrival of the Lev of Rožmitál family. They constructed most of the castle buildings, notably the defensive tower with murals dating back to 1480 and the late Gothic palace with a three-sided corbel. The murals in the Knights’ Hall (Rytířský sál) also date from this period.

The old castle was expanded with various constructions under its later owners, the Counts of Rozdražov and the Counts of Serényi in the 18th century. In 1798, the Hildprandt family acquired Blatná and undertook interior improvements and regothicization of the entire structure in the early 19th century. The Hildprandt family continues extensive reconstruction of the castle to this day.

A large English park, open year-round to visitors, was established on the former estate. Here, you can encounter freely roaming fallow deer and peacocks. The castle and its adjacent park are a popular location for filmmakers and a truly fairy-tale setting for weddings.

Do you know that...

… you can feed fallow deer in the castle park or go for a walk with an alpaca?
