From Lišov in the Footsteps of Jan Žižka of Trocnov
An easy ride through the forests of Lišov to the Žižka Oak
A 16 km long, easy route through the beautiful forests of Lišov, leading to a historic oak tree where the legendary Jan Žižka is said to have plotted his plans against the nobility.
Route (16 km): Lišov – Hůrky – Žižka Oak – Velechvín – Pod Vlčí jámou – Lišov
The journey begins at Míru Square in Lišov, following the red-marked trail along the road towards Lomnice nad Lužnicí. The open landscape offers views of the gently rolling hills of Lišov. The road leads to the village of Hůrky, where you can see a chapel from 1868 and a memorial to the fallen from 1923. However, the red trail turns left before entering the village, heading towards the Hůrecký Stream.
After crossing the stream, the path climbs gently out of the village. At a fork, take the slight right. The trail leads towards the picturesque Dolní Pohoř Pond. At the dam, turn left onto the yellow-marked trail, which leads to the Hůrky crossroads.
Now, follow the green-marked trail, which takes you through tall forests along a narrow paved road. After about a kilometer, take the left turn and prepare to walk, as the next section follows the old embankment of a long-drained pond, now overgrown with forest. A narrow, mysterious path leads through the dense woods until you reach the majestic Žižka Oak, its massive branches reaching toward the sky.
A plaque on the tree trunk features an image of Žižka and a quote from the Rožmberk Execution Book. According to legend, Jan Žižka met here between 1408 and 1409 with his brother Jaroslav, noblemen, and outlaws to discuss strategies for guerrilla warfare against the Rožmberks. The Žižka Oak is estimated to be around 600 years old, making it likely the last surviving Žižka Oak in South Bohemia.
Bid farewell to the Žižka Oak, return to the green-marked trail, and continue until you reach a crossroad, where you turn left. After a few meters, take another left onto a narrower path, leading out of the forest. Continue following the green trail through open terrain to Velechvín.
In Velechvín, the path leads down through the village square, where you’ll find a Neo-Baroque chapel of St. Florian from the early 19th century, several traditional farmhouses (such as house No. 3 from 1822), and a restored blacksmith’s forge.
From Velechvín, continue along the green-marked trail, crossing the Hůrecký Stream towards the Pod Vlčí jámou crossroads. To your right, the forested Vávra Hill rises above you. At the crossroads, turn left and follow the blue-marked trail, which passes along the edge of a meadow towards Čankov Hill. Here, you can enjoy a scenic view of the Třeboň Basin.
Turn right along the fence and follow the path past newly built family houses, returning to Lišov.
