To Červená Lhota in the Footsteps of Goldilocks (1973)

Visit one of the most fairytale-like castles in the Czech Republic.

Life has been flowing within the walls of Červená Lhota Castle for over 600 years. Over the centuries, the castle has undergone significant architectural changes. The first major transformation took place shortly after 1530, when Jan Kába of Rybňany purchased the medieval fortress, which had been documented in written records only since 1465, and began its Renaissance renovation. The most significant and beautiful changes occurred after 1641, when the castle came into the possession of Vilém Slavata of Chlum and Košumberk, a prominent Czech nobleman, who had the first floor rebuilt in the Baroque style. The last structural modifications were carried out by the princely family of Schönburg-Hartenstein, who owned the castle until 1945, when it was nationalized.

Červená Lhota holds the record for the highest number of fairy tales and films shot here. Perhaps the most famous of these is Zlatovláska (Goldilocks, 1973), starring Jorga Kotrbová as the title character and Petr Štěpánek as Jiřík. Other fairy tales filmed here include O zatoulané princezně (The Lost Princess), O kráse a štěstí (Of Beauty and Happiness), and Princezna na hrášku (The Princess and the Pea). Feature films have also been shot here, among them the well-known Svatby pana Voka (The Weddings of Mr. Vok) starring Miloš Kopecký.

The castle, along with its pond, park, and some farm buildings, has been a National Cultural Monument of the Czech Republic since 2001 and is fully open to the public. Visitors can explore three guided tours:

  • Historical Interiors of the First Floor
  • Attic Rooms
  • The Cellars

Tip: If you want to see the castle from the surface of the pond, you can rent a boat from the on-site boathouse, which operates during the same opening hours as the castle.
