Educational Trail "Landscape of Changes"
The educational trail "Landscape of Changes" introduces visitors to the immediate surroundings of the village of Vidov, located 7 km south of České Budějovice.
The landscape around Vidov is unique due to its diverse geomorphological and biogeographical conditions, representing a variety of natural and cultural ecosystems found around České Budějovice. In the vicinity of the village, three geomorphological units converge: Lišovský práh, the Novohradské foothills, and the České Budějovice basin. From a biogeographical perspective, four bioregions intersect here: Českobudějovický, Bechyňský, Třeboňský, and Českokrumlovský. This varied terrain results in a wide range of ecosystems, shaped by human influence – from flat, highly modified floodplain areas along the Malše River, with intensive agriculture, high-voltage power lines, water treatment plants, and a photovoltaic power station, to diverse cultural landscapes with scattered greenery, and even rarely preserved patches of original wetland and forest vegetation. The trail also includes newly restored ponds, built in 2014.
Unlike most educational trails, this one does not aim to lead visitors only through pristine nature. Instead, it highlights human impact on the environment, including large-scale agriculture, industrial activity, and illegal dumping sites, which often have negative consequences for ecosystems. However, the trail also explains the benefits of these human activities, illustrating how environmental damage is often the cost of our modern way of life.
The trail is easily accessible from České Budějovice, with both the start and end points located at the final stop of bus line No. 10. Alternatively, bicycles can be left at the village square near station No. 1.
The interpretive panels are particularly designed for secondary school students, but the trail is suitable for all visitors interested in nature and landscapes. The trail is accessible year-round, but some sections may be difficult to walk during winter or after prolonged rain. Sturdy footwear is recommended.
