2. Egon Schiele's Garden Studio
Schiele moved into the garden house by the Vltava River in May 1911 with his life partner Wally Neužilová. His paintings inspired by the city and its themes were created here, and he also painted his much-discussed portraits and nudes. The locals, however, were outraged by his free way of life and especially by the fact that he drew nudes of teenage girls from Krumlov. At the beginning of August he was forced to leave the town. Thereafter, he returned only briefly. The reconstructed studio is now open to the public in the summer months, and there is also a café with refreshments in the house. Garden Studio of Egon Schiele →
3. Motifs of Krumlov paintings from the Tavierna
The stay in Český Krumlov was very inspiring for the young painter Egon Schiele and it is clear that it enriched his work with new themes. He looked for his subjects in the streets of the old town, painting it from the surrounding hills or the castle tower, but also from other unusual views. On the banks of the Vltava River opposite Plešivec we find ourselves at the place where Schiele drew terrace houses. Here he created paintings depicting the suburb of Plešivec - the Old Houses (Krumlov).
4. Egon Schiele's mother's birthplace in Parkán
Egon Schiele's mother, Marie Schiele, née Soukupová (1861-1935), was born and lived for several years in the house at 111 Parkán Street. The one-storey building with a neoclassical facade from 1871 has a gabled roof parallel to the street, covered with tiles. The rear facade is a former wall on the ground floor, the first floor is extended with a pavilion. Egon Schiele.
5. The former Café Fink (now the Pizzeria Latrán)
During his stay in Krumlov in 1910-1911, Schiele often visited his favourite café Fink at the corner of Latrán and Pivovarská Street. It is said that here Schiele also outraged the locals, unashamedly putting his feet on the table and drawing lewd pictures on beer coasters. Since the first half of the 19th century, the two-storey building on Latrána No. 37 has maintained essentially the same function - restaurant, café, confectionery. A beer tap is even mentioned in the house as early as the mid-17th century. Today you will find the popular Latrán pizzeria here.
6. House No. 133 in Masná Street
After his arrival in Český Krumlov in 1910, Egon Schiele stayed for several months with two like-minded friends in an apartment in Masná Street No. 133. Just a few metres from his mother's house. At that time he already had his own artistic style, which was based on Art Nouveau, but at the same time influenced by Expressionism. Playful walks with the mobile app Hidden Stories →
7. Motifs of the Krumlov paintings from the arcades of the Krumlov castle tower
The castle tower played an important role in Schiele's work. The view from above fascinated him and inspired many of his works. In addition to the view from the castle tower, he was often inspired by the view from the lookout behind the castle gate in front of the castle garden. From here he had the best view of the houses and rooftops of Krumlov. This is how the paintings Night Krumlov, Old Town, Dead Town, Arch of Krumlov Houses, Houses in the Arch, End of the World were created.
8. The Inn at the City of Vienna and the Inn at the Golden Angel
Egon Schiele also left his mark in other places. After being forced to leave the city in August 1911, Schiele returned to Krumlov for shorter stays. During these visits, he stayed mainly in the inns "At the City of Vienna" (now the Bellevue Hotel) and "At the Golden Angel". He remained enchanted by the atmosphere of the town, which was reflected in his works such as the painting "The Town on the Blue River".
