Additional information
The monastery dates back to the 15th century, when it was built on the site of an earlier structure that had been completely destroyed by the Hussites. The three-winged building, with its cloister surrounding a square courtyard, served as the residence of Franciscan friars for more than four centuries and is today an exceptionally valuable monument. Inside, you will find a true medieval architectural gem – the largest collection of net vaults in the Czech Republic, whose significance extends beyond the country’s borders.
The monastery complex includes the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and the Chapel of the Crucifixion of the Lord and the Sorrowful Virgin Mary. Here, the spiritual atmosphere is interwoven with architectural splendor. Thanks to a Baroque reconstruction, the chapel features an unusual octagonal layout, while the church is once again covered with a magnificent net vault.
But what really made this monastery famous across the region was a miracle – or rather, several miracles. Three small statues here miraculously withstood the fury of rampaging soldiers and, in times of peace, were said to have healed the sick. How did these statues defend themselves? How exactly did they help the faithful? These fascinating stories and more await you during your visit to the Bechyně Monastery.
